Full default: C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\kenshi\save\ (since v1.0.50). Each save is a folder named like your in-game save name. AppData\Local is hidden by default.

Full default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Kenshi\save\ . Older installs kept saves here; some users still have them if they never migrated. Check the in-game 'User Save Location' setting to be sure.

Cloud saves

Kenshi does NOT use Steam Cloud — there is no automatic cloud backup at all. The only backup is you copying the save folder yourself. Because Kenshi autosaves frequently and over the same slot, a crash mid-save can corrupt a run, so keep periodic copies of runs you care about.

Cloud save conflict & platform recovery

There is no cloud, so the real risk is a corrupted or overwritten save after a crash during Kenshi's frequent autosaves — with no cloud copy to fall back on.

  1. Open %LOCALAPPDATA%\kenshi\save (or the install-folder save path) and copy the folder of the run you care about somewhere safe.
  2. Kenshi keeps a few rolling autosave/quicksave folders — if your main save corrupts, load an earlier autosave folder instead.
  3. To restore, paste your backed-up save folder back into the save directory with the game closed; it appears in the in-game load list by its folder name.
