Mafia II keeps its saves in two completely different folders depending on whether you own the 2010 Classic or the 2020 Definitive Edition — here's exactly where each one lives, how to open it, and the OneDrive path bug that eats DE saves.
Save file locations

AppData\Local is hidden by default. Paste %LOCALAPPDATA%\2K Games\Mafia II into the Run box. Saves are named savesgame.* files inside the Saves subfolder.

Different from the Classic path. If your Documents folder is redirected to OneDrive or its path contains Cyrillic/non-Latin characters, the DE can silently fail to write saves — that is the most common 'my save disappeared' cause.

Cloud saves
Both the Classic and Definitive Edition on Steam use Steam Cloud. If Steam Cloud has an older copy than your local save, a conflict prompt appears on launch — choose the copy that matches your real last mission, not just the newer timestamp, because a cloud overwrite can roll you back.
How to open the save folder
- Press Win + R to open the Run box.
- For Classic paste %LOCALAPPDATA%\2K Games\Mafia II and press Enter; for the Definitive Edition paste %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Mafia II Definitive Edition.
- Open the Saves subfolder and copy the files somewhere safe before verifying game files or reinstalling.
- Keep Steam Cloud enabled as a second backup.
Save problems & fixes
Mafia II Definitive Edition won't save / progress lost
Move your Documents folder off OneDrive and ensure the path has only Latin characters, then relaunch. Check Steam › right-click game › Properties › General that Steam Cloud is enabled and let it re-sync.
Can't find the Classic Mafia II saves
AppData is hidden — use %LOCALAPPDATA%\2K Games\Mafia II in the Run box rather than browsing manually. If empty, you must start and save one game first.

Where is the Mafia II save file on PC?
Classic (2010): %LOCALAPPDATA%\2K Games\Mafia II\Saves. Definitive Edition (2020): Documents\My Games\Mafia II Definitive Edition\Saves. They use different folders and are not compatible.
Why can't Classic saves be loaded in the Definitive Edition?
They are separate games with different save formats and folders. A Classic save in AppData\Local\2K Games\Mafia II will not appear in the Definitive Edition, which reads only from Documents\My Games\Mafia II Definitive Edition.
Why is my Mafia II Definitive Edition save missing or not saving?
