Borderlands 2 Save Editor — Money, Eridium & Backpack
Last verified: 2026-10-01
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\SaveData\<id>\Save####.sav
Borderlands 2 PC saves are Save####.sav files in %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\SaveData (inside a numeric Steam/profile folder). The standard tool is Gibbed's Borderlands 2 Save Editor (free, Windows) - it decrypts and parses the .sav into tabs: Character (class, level, XP, Overpower level, skill points, name, appearance), Currency (money, Eridium capped at 500, Seraph crystals, Torgue tokens), Backpack and Bank (your carried and stored gear). You get gear two ways: build an item from its parts in the Backpack tab, or paste a community item code - BL2 codes start with 'BL2(' and go in via Paste Code. Save in the editor and it re-serializes the .sav; the game loads it next launch. The one thing it cannot change is Golden Keys: that count lives in your shared profile (profile.bin), not the character save, so Gibbed only shows the last-seen number and the field is read-only. Always copy the .sav first - a bad edit (invalid part combo, over-cap value) can make the character fail to load.
Borderlands 2 PC saves are Save####.sav files you open with Gibbed's Borderlands 2 Save Editor, which parses the save into Character, Currency, Backpack and Bank tabs so you edit level, money, Eridium and gear without touching hex.
What you can edit and which tag to change
| What it changes | XML tag | Example value | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level / XP / Overpower | character progress |
Set level 72, OP10 |
Editing level does not auto-grant the skill points for those levels in older revisions - set skill points on the Character tab too. |
| Money | currency |
Set 99,999,999 cash |
Plain Currency-tab field. No real cap that matters in normal play. |
| Eridium | currency (capped) |
Set Eridium to 500 |
Hard-capped at 500 in-game; setting higher is clamped on load. Seraph crystals and Torgue tokens are separate fields. |
| Skill points | character progress |
Add unspent skill points |
Set directly on the Character tab; needed if you raised level manually and want the matching points. |
| Backpack / Bank gear | item parts or code |
Paste a BL2( weapon code |
Build from parts or Paste Code. An invalid part combination can crash the load - keep a backup. |
| Golden Keys | profile value (NOT editable) |
- |
Stored in your shared profile, not the save - Gibbed shows the last value but cannot edit it. Use SHiFT codes instead. |
How to edit your Borderlands 2 save by hand
- Fully quit Borderlands 2 and, if you use Steam Cloud, disable it (Steam -> Borderlands 2 -> Properties -> turn off Steam Cloud) so it can't overwrite your edit.
- Open %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\SaveData\<numeric id> and copy your Save####.sav somewhere safe as a backup.
- Launch Gibbed's Borderlands 2 Save Editor and Open that Save####.sav - it decrypts and shows Character / Currency / Backpack / Bank tabs.
- Make your edits: Currency for money/Eridium, Character for level and skill points, Backpack/Bank to build or paste 'BL2(' item codes.
- Save in the editor (it writes back to the same .sav), then launch the game and load the character to confirm it loads cleanly before deleting your backup.
Prefer a save editor instead of raw XML?
Borderlands 2 edits are single-player/offline by nature; there's no competitive ladder to ban from, but injected gear with impossible parts can crash co-op partners' games or your own load. Keep item codes to legitimate part combinations. Golden Keys are the classic trap - they're a profile value, so no save editor touches them; redeem SHiFT codes for keys instead.
Mistakes that corrupt the save
- Golden Keys live in profile.bin, not the save - no save editor can add them; Gibbed only displays the last-seen count.
- Eridium is clamped to 500 on load no matter what you set in the editor.
- An invalid weapon/item part combination pasted into the backpack can make the character fail to load - always keep the backup .sav.
- Steam Cloud can restore the pre-edit save if you leave it enabled during editing.
- Match the editor revision to your game build; a very old editor can misread newer DLC item parts.

FAQ
Where are Borderlands 2 save files on PC?
Save####.sav files in %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\SaveData, inside a numeric profile/Steam-ID folder. Press Win+R and paste the path.
Can Gibbed's editor give me Golden Keys?
No. Golden Keys are stored in your shared profile, not the character save, so Gibbed shows the last number but the field is read-only. Redeem SHiFT codes for keys instead.
How do I add gear with Gibbed?
On the Backpack or Bank tab, either build an item from its parts or use Paste Code with a community 'BL2(' item code, then save. Keep parts legitimate so the character still loads.
Why won't my character load after editing?
Usually an impossible item part combo or an out-of-range value. Restore your backup .sav, redo the edit with valid parts, and keep Eridium at or below 500.
